We learn from research in leadership that leaders who demonstrate great leadership can achieve seemingly impossible dreams in the unlikeliest of places. Africa needs ordinary people to achieve their extraordinary visions of success by following the steps to success by doing the little things that lead to success in Africa and avoiding the pitfalls that plague many of their predecessors.
The Success in Africa Podcast is a weekly podcast to support you to become successful in Africa
This week , Dr Modupe shares the story of Ashley Uys, whom he refers to as hustler in chief, founder and CEO of Medical Diagnostech. His company was the first to create a rapid testing kit for COVID-19.
Despite growing up in very modest circumstances;
Ashley did not let his circumstances determine his destiny.His life changed when he was accepted into a business incubator programme that offered scholarships. He was taught how to run a business including areas in marketing, business administration and financial management. As part of the program, Ashley wrote a business plan for starting his own company and after completing, he found a co-founder and started a company (Real World Diagnostics) that would design and produce diagnostic test kits but unfortunately had to part ways as the company, did not make a single sale in its first year
From this point he focused on what was needed at the moment and had a breakthrough. Today, Ashley Uys has 3 companies; Real World Diagnostic, Medical Diagnostech and Oculus ID.
Lessons learned from this episode:
1. Leverage the talent of competent professionals and never skimp on acquiring the best talent.
2. In order to get what you want, you have to be willing to ask for it and ask continually because luck does not come to those who sit and wait but to those who have the courage and presences to go out and get what they need
3. Nobody cares about how good your product or service is unless it is a product or service that is needed.
We have been socialized into a false image of success that makes us shy to talk about poor cash flow in the early stages of our entrepreneurial journeys.
A critical lesson we learn from this episode is what the mother of Ken Njoroge, a co-founder of Cellulant in East Africa taught him about money.
Ken’s mother taught him to never let the amount of money in his pocket determine how you he sees himself or limit his dreams.
The episode has more nuggets.
